Printable Summer Bookmarks

Sometimes it’s kind of a chore to get my kids to read over the summer. This year I’m tackling the issue on several fronts. I bought them all a ton of books from our neighborhood garage sale a few weeks ago. I’ve been letting them buy a few of their favorite titles to read on our iPad. And I’ve created a few printable reading incentives by putting together these reading logs and now these cute printable bookmarks!

To make these bookmarks last longer, print them on cardstock – using lamination sheets is even better! Make these into a fun summer craft by punching a hole in the top and adding an embroidery floss tassle with beads or charms!

Printable Reading Logs

Summer is here! And I need all the help I can get to keep my kids reading over the next three months. So today I created a big collection of printable reading logs – you can track the number of books, number of minutes, or both with these fun themed printables for both boys and girls.

Here’s a tip I’ve found to get my kids to want to read more – get an Apple iPad or Kindle. Then watch them ask to read (and fight for their turn!) on the family ebook reader. It may be a little pricey, but now that I have an iPad, I can tell you they are totally worth it. Be sure to get the $2 buck math drills app, too (best $2 dollars I’ve ever spent)!!

Printable 1st Grade Sight Words

Practicing sight words was such a huge help to my kids as they were learning to read – especially for my youngest daughter who needed lots of extra help to get her reading skills at grade level (too right brained – just like her mom!!). This list of 48 easy words are just fight for first graders, or even second graders who need the extra practice. Just print them out and cut them up into easy flash cards for kids!

Mother’s Day Kids Poems

I can’t believe that it’s almost MAY. Really?! Because I’m still afraid we’re going to get that one last snowfall here in Chicago (well, we still might, actually…. blech). I ask for the same thing every year for Mother’s Day – just a clean house! Somehow I never get it! Since we do so many crafts around here, my kids are usually really great at coming up with awesome homemade presents – last year they made these tissue paper flower topiaries with me for their grandma. I’m going to be hard pressed to outdo that one this year!

These printable Mother’s Day poems for kids would make great reading practice, and also double as Mother’s Day coloring pages.

Here’s a new set of Easter poems for kids. One is cute and funny – the other a little more serious. And I should note that if you have any standards about mentioning religious themes in your classroom, you should review the Easter at our House poem to ensure it’s appropriate for your curriculum.

Kids Poems for Black History Month

I’m thrilled to start a new series of printable poems for kids here on Classroom Jr.! Our kids mad libs are seriously popular, and teachers have been asking for poems, so I’m so happy to be able to bring these to you! My daughter brings home poems nearly every night to read for homework, which really has helped her reading skills. She is more of an auditory kid – not visual – so she needed a lot of extra help to bring her skills up to grade level. Poems were extremely helpful because the rhyme and rhythm made the words easier to say and understand.

Our kids poems are written just for us, so you won’t find these anywhere else! Look for more seasonal and holiday poems for kids throughout the year!

I simply can’t imagine an early childhood classroom without the magic of Dr. Seuss! I read Hop on Pop as a child until the pages fell out of the book. They are SO GREAT for reading practice for my kids, because they are so easy, yet so much fun to read.

Theodor Seuss Geisel was a fascinating man that was famous for more than children’s books during his career. He was also a political cartoonist and advertising illustrator, and ironically enough, has never won a Caldecott Medal or Newbery Medal. To which I say, WTH?!
