My kids are SO ready to go back to school. Yesterday they were even watching TV with their backpacks on, wishing summer was over – I kid you not! So I’ve thrown together some back to school worksheets in the hopes of capitalizing on their summer boredom woes. But these will also be great for kids in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade as a way of giving them some fun worksheets to welcome them to the new school year.

April Fools Day Worksheets for Kids

Here’s a new set of April Fools Day worksheets to create some pretty fun learning opportunities on April 1st. First there is a reading page to teach kids a little bit about the history of April Fools, then there is a quiz on the reading to test reading comprehension. There is also a page with 5 short answer questions to get kids writing, suitable for grades 4 – 6. Lastly there is a word search with 9 synonyms for the word Prank – have fun with them!

Women’s History Month Worksheets

Here’s a brand new set of Women’s History Month worksheets that I am very proud of! They include a short reading assignment about why we celebrate important women in history, a comprehension quiz on the reading material, and 5 excellent essay questions for kids to learn more about the influential women that interest them the most. There’s also a fun women’s history word search with my favorite gal Rosie the Riveter.

The topics on the worksheets cover the role of the First Lady, several female ‘firsts’ (like the first woman to go in space, Sally Ride), and the role of the National Organization for Women (NOW). The essay question sheet invites kids to analyze why these women were important in history, and to discuss whether or not they agree with some favorite quotes by Amelia Earhart and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

These worksheets are appropriate for kids in grade 3, grade 4, grade 5 or grade 6.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins Activity Worksheets

I have a good family friend who homeschools her children. I asked for her advice on classroom materials to develop for Classroom Jr., and she immediately said that there is an ongoing need for worksheets and activities based on classic children’s literature. Not only was Mr. Popper’s Penguins at the top of her list, but it’s also being made into a movie with Jim Carrey this summer!

The 1938 classic book tells the story of Mr. Popper, the small-town housepainter who dreams of exploring Antarctic regions, and Captain Cook, the penguin who turns Mr. Popper’s world upside down. It was awarded with a Newberry Honor in 1939 and is appropriate for readers age 9-12.

Civil War for Kids

My dad is a big history buff, and used to love to take us to Civil War battlefields whenever we traveled in the South. Sadly, I think his good intentions were lost on us – but if we went back today, I’d take my own kids to some! As I was putting together a list of the most important people of the Civil War, I learned a few things myself. I didn’t know that the American Red Cross grew out of Clara Barton’s work as a war nurse, nor that Harriet Tubman single-handedly saved so many people in the Underground Railroad.

Learn About Abraham Lincoln

A new website has been created recently that I think is a fantastic learning tool about Abraham Lincoln. It is a database of the daily chronology of his life – on any given day of the year, you can find out what Abe Lincoln was doing between 1809 and1865, aptly named The Lincoln Log. For example, on today’s date – August 23, 1864, it states:

At a cabinet meeting, President Lincoln asks each member to sign “the back of a” memorandum. Lincoln does not reveal the contents of the document, which reads,”This morning, as for some days past, it seems exceedingly probable that this Administration will not be re-elected. Then it will be my duty to so co-operate with the President elect, as to save the Union between the election and the inauguration; as he will have secured his election on such ground that he can not possibly save it afterwards.”

Not only is the information fascinating, but it will give kids a bit of a personal connection to one of our greatest presidents of all time!

Printable Graph Paper and Grid Paper

My son made me a proud mama the other day when he specifically asked for grid paper so that he could practice his drawing. I have to admit I was impressed with his desire to be precise – if only he was that way about cleaning his room!

This set of printable graph papers come in inch increments at .25″, .5″, .75″, and 1″. There is also 1cm, 1.5cm and 2cm grid papers as well. There is also a 15 x 15 cell grid that is perfect to use to make your own word searches with your weekly vocabulary words.

Important Grid Paper Printing Instructions

If you require accurate grid measurements for your graph paper printouts, you must ensure that your printer is set to print at a full 100%. Some printers also default to your browser settings, so if you are having problems, check these as well.

This will likely mean that part of the page will be outside of the print area, and tell your printer to proceed anyway. Each printer is different, so I cannot give you exact instructions on how to achieve this with your particular setup. But in general, once you hit the ‘Click to Print’ button on the next page, you will have to go into your printer options to change the setting to 100%.

Most printers – and browsers – by default print pages at the setting ‘Shrink to Fit”, and this will not work.

Memorial Day Worksheets for Kids

As I was putting together these Memorial Day printables, I realized I didn’t know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. It turns out that Veterans Day was established to as a way to primarily thank living military veterans. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in service to their country, particularly those who died in battle.

Memorial Day Poem

Red poppies are traditionally worn and given on Memorial Day. It was written in 1915 by World War I Colonel John McCrae. McCrae’s poem had a huge impact on two women, Anna E. Guerin of France and Moina Michael. Both worked to initiate the sale of artificial poppies to help orphans and others left destitute by the war.
